About this place
Huế is the former imperial capital of Vietnam, a city steeped in history and renowned for its connection to the Nguyễn Dynasty, which ruled from 1802 to 1945. Situated in the central region of the country, the city is elegantly bisected by the Perfume River (Hương Giang). The northern bank holds the old city and the monumental Imperial Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site, while the modern city, with most of its hotels and restaurants, spreads across the southern side along a well-developed riverside promenade.
Beyond the citadel's walls, Huế's cultural landscape extends to the serene royal tombs scattered in the southern outskirts. These meticulously designed mausoleums, set amidst tranquil gardens and lakes, offer a profound glimpse into the lives and aesthetics of Vietnam's last emperors. The city is also a celebrated culinary destination, known as the birthplace of complex imperial cuisine and beloved local specialties like bún bò Huế.

Planning Tips
- Getting in: The Da Nang airport is a busier hub just two hours away by car, offering more flight connections than Hue's local airport.
- Train travel: The train journey south from Da Nang to Hue, via the Hai Van Pass, is incredibly scenic and highly recommended.
- Getting around: When taking a cyclo, always agree on a fixed price in dong (not US dollars) for a round trip before you depart to avoid disputes.
- Packing: Bring a sweater and jacket for chilly winter nights when temperatures can drop to 8°C, and a reliable umbrella year-round.
- Dining: For the cheapest vegetarian meals, visit on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month, but be aware restaurants will be very crowded.
- Currency caution: At the Lao Bao border crossing, establish a clear exchange rate before handing over any cash, as poor rates and confusion are common.
