About this place
Hubballi (Hubli) forms one half of the twin cities of Hubli–Dharwad, the second‑largest urban area in Karnataka. Its name means “flower creeper” in Kannada, a nod to a past that stretches back to the Vijaynagara empire, when it grew into a vital cotton and iron trading post. Today Hubballi remains a commercial and industrial hub, and it’s the headquarters of the Indian Railways’ South Western Railway Zone.
The surrounding countryside is heavy with cotton and groundnut cultivation, and the city’s handloom textile units and century‑old railway workshop underline its practical, working character. Visitors come here mostly for business or as a jumping‑off point, but a growing café scene and a handful of serene temples and nearby waterfalls give even short‑stay travelers a taste of North Karnataka life.
