About this place
Huambo is a major city in Central Angola and the capital of Huambo Province, once envisioned as the country's new capital under the name Nova Lisboa. Designed in 1912 with a distinct Portuguese-style layout, its monumental rotunda, garden areas, and grid street plan still shape the city center today. The civil war left deep scars, but rapid reconstruction has revitalized the core with an Angolan flair layered over the Portuguese design. Surrounding the old center, newer bairros continue to expand and recover, reflecting a city and economy that are steadily reinvesting in the future.
