About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Hsinchu, often called the Windy City for the constant breezes off the Taiwan Strait, blends centuries of history with a vibrant modern economy. As the oldest city in northern Taiwan, its roots stretch back nearly 400 years, from its time as an aboriginal settlement to its development under the Qing Dynasty and Japanese colonial era.

The founding of the Hsinchu Science Park in 1980 transformed the area into a global semiconductor hub, bringing prosperity and an international flavor. While not a typical tourist destination, its abundant hotels and excellent transport links make it a very pleasant and convenient base for exploring the beautiful mountain areas of Hsinchu County.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Sample local delicacies around Chenghuang Temple — hunt down classic Hsinchu dishes like rice noodles (mĭfēn), pork ball soup (gòngwántāng), and Taiwanese meatballs (ròuyuán) from numerous small, inexpensive food booths.
  • Browse evening markets for a casual meal — the Garden Street night market at the end of GuangFu Road features a popular shop selling Singaporean curries, while a market on NanDa Road comes alive every Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Stroll the city's linear parks — the medians of Wenhua, Xinyi, and Sanmin roads have been transformed into green spaces, with the parks along Wenhua and Xinyi incorporating the city’s historic moat into a romantic evening setting.

  • September to November for ideal weather — this period offers the most comfortable temperatures, minimal rain, and abundant sunshine, making it the best window for exploring both the city and nearby mountains.
  • Spring for a balance — while not as perfectly dry and comfortable as autumn, spring generally provides pleasant conditions before the heat of summer arrives.
  • Avoid Lunar New Year for comfort — the winter wind can make this period feel especially cold, despite the festive atmosphere in the region.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Plan your airport transfer — to get from Taoyuan Airport, take a U-bus and be prepared to change at the 'Jhongli Transit Station', as there are no direct buses.
  • Grab a local snack pack — visit Xinfuzhen Trading Co. on Beimen Street for traditional pastries, or look for Hai Rui Meatballs and Nanxing Rice Noodles shops to take home local specialties.
  • Find English books at Eslite — the bookstore at the corner of Minquan and Zhongyang Roads offers the best selection of English titles in the city.
  • Use the free shuttle — if arriving by High Speed Rail to Chupei, a free shuttle service runs to central Hsinchu approximately every 20 minutes.
  • Save on tolls — if driving from Taipei, buy a book of 9+1 tickets at toll gates for a slight discount.
