About this place
Houston is a sprawling, dynamic port city in Southeastern Texas and the most diverse large city in the United States. More than just a 9-to-5 business hub, it is a great melting pot of cultures, where towering skyscrapers stand near historic neighborhoods, massive refinery complexes, and pockets of artist communities. The city’s character is a unique blend of Texan swagger and international influence, shaped by an oil boom and continuing immigration.
With no appreciable zoning, Houston has developed into a very automobile-dependent, spread-out metropolis. However, areas close to downtown are becoming denser and more walkable, revealing hidden gems like bars and art galleries nestled among historic streets—an urban fabric not possible in many other American cities. Almost everything to see or do lies within the urban core inside the 610 Loop, between downtown, the Galleria, and the Texas Medical Center.
