About this place

Last updated Jul 26, 2026

Hong Kong is a city of striking contrasts, where gleaming skyscrapers meet lush mountains and traditional fishing villages. A former British colony now operating as a Special Administrative Region of China, it blends Cantonese heritage with a cosmopolitan, international outlook. The harbourfront skyline is iconic, but more than 70% of the territory is countryside, offering hiking trails, secluded beaches, and country parks.

Home to over 7 million people, Hong Kong is famously dense and fast-paced, yet its excellent public transport makes exploring easy. From the dim sum parlours and lively markets of Kowloon to the high-end shopping of Central and the scenic outlying islands, the city rewards travellers who venture beyond the obvious.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • Ride the Star Ferry and Peak Tram — Two classic Hong Kong experiences: the harbour crossing offers iconic skyline views, and the steep ascent to Victoria Peak delivers a stunning panorama from the top.
  • Hike the territory's trails — Hong Kong has four major long-distance trails, plus shorter family-friendly walks. The Maclehose Trail and Dragon's Back are popular, with routes offering coastal views and lush mountain scenery.
  • Visit a beach or outlying island — Beaches like Repulse Bay and Shek O are a bus ride away, while islands such as Lamma offer relaxed waterfront walks and seafood. Sai Kung Peninsula is another scenic day-trip option.
  • Catch a horse race — Racing at Happy Valley on a Wednesday night is a unique mix of sport and social scene. The historic track, beer garden, and low tourist entry fee make it a memorable evening.
  • Explore Hong Kong cinema and live comedy — The Avenue of Stars celebrates screen icons, while the city's stand-up comedy scene, anchored by the Take Out Comedy Club, offers regular English-language shows.

Things to See

  • Victoria Harbour and the skyline — The waterfront promenade in Tsim Sha Tsui frames the famous skyline, especially during the nightly Symphony of Lights show. The view from Kowloon across to Hong Kong Island is the city's signature image.
  • Traditional temples and heritage — The Man Mo Temple, Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery, and Ping Shan Heritage Trail reveal the city's deeper cultural layers. The Kowloon Walled City Park preserves remnants of a famously dense enclave.
  • Museums for every interest — The Hong Kong Museum of History provides a thorough overview of the city's past. Other standouts include the new Palace Museum in West Kowloon, the Maritime Museum, and the hands-on Science Museum.
  • Lantau Island's landmarks — The Tian Tan Buddha and Po Lin Monastery sit high on the island, reached by the Ngong Ping 360 cable car. Traditional stilt houses in Tai O offer a glimpse of a vanishing way of life.
  • Theme parks — Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park appeal to families and thrill-seekers alike. Ocean Park adds an aquarium, pandas, and a scenic cable car to its roller coasters.

  • September to mid-December — Autumn offers the most pleasant weather, with temperatures averaging around 23°C, lower humidity, and clear skies. This is prime time for hiking and outdoor sightseeing.
  • March to early May — Spring brings warmth and blooming landscapes, though humidity and rain increase as the season progresses. It's a decent shoulder option before the summer heat arrives.
  • Avoid peak summer (June–August) — Heat, humidity, and typhoon risk can make outdoor exploration taxing. However, it's still fine for air-conditioned shopping and indoor attractions if you don't mind the weather.
  • Chinese New Year (late Jan–Feb) — A culturally rich period with parades and fireworks, though it's often cool and wet. Book accommodation well ahead, as demand spikes.
  • Mid-December to February — Winters are mild, with daytime temps typically 15°C to 20°C. It's a good window for city exploration, though occasional cold snaps and rain occur later in the season.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • Get an Octopus card — This stored-value card works on almost all public transport and at many shops and restaurants. It saves fumbling for change and simplifies daily travel.
  • Pack comfortable walking shoes — Hong Kong requires a lot of time on your feet. Even with good shoes, full days on hard surfaces can be tiring, so plan breaks and carry water.
  • Carry identification — Everyone over 16 is required to carry ID. A passport or a photocopy is sufficient for most casual checks, though some bars and clubs may insist on seeing the original.
  • Respect local customs — When someone pours you tea, tap two or three fingers on the table to thank them. Do not stick chopsticks vertically into rice, as it resembles funeral incense.
  • Plan for weather — Summer demands light clothing, mosquito repellent, and an umbrella. In winter, pack extra layers, as indoor heating is rarely strong. Autumn and spring are the most comfortable for outdoor plans.
