About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Gomel (also transliterated Homieĺ) is the second largest city in Belarus and the capital of Gomel Oblast, with a population around 500,000. Steeped in history, it was founded at the end of the 10th century on the lands of the Eastern Slavic Radimichs, later becoming part of Kievan Rus and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Its strategic position on a north-south trade route toward the Black Sea brought both destructive raids and rich cultural influences from Czarist Russia, Poland, Ukraine, and Western Europe.

The modern city is shaped by two pivotal events: extensive post-World War II rebuilding and the Chernobyl tragedy, which placed Gomel on a major radiation path and remains a collective turning point for many residents. Today, visitors are drawn primarily to the hilltop palace and park complex overlooking the Sosz River, which anchors a city centre laid out in a triangular plan along two main streets.
