About this place
Hohhot (呼和浩特 Hūhéhàotè; Mongolian: ᠬᠥᠬᠡᠬᠣᠲᠠ Höh hot) is the capital of Inner Mongolia, serving as the region's administrative, economic, and cultural capital. Its name combines two Mongolian words — Hoh ('blue') and Hot ('city') — giving it the meaning 'blue city.'
Since becoming the capital in 1947, Hohhot has grown rapidly, emerging as an industrial and economic powerhouse that accounts for over 60% of Inner Mongolia's total industrial output. It is home to two of China's largest dairy companies, Yili and Mengniu, earning the nickname 'Dairy Capital' of China.
While the city lacks an abundance of historical sites compared to older Chinese capitals, it offers a unique cultural blend. Mongolian Buddhism (an offshoot of Tibetan Buddhism) continues to thrive, and Mongolian culture is actively preserved. A large Hui Muslim population adds another layer to the culinary scene, with many halal restaurants throughout the city. The city is at its greenest and most pleasant in spring and early summer.
