About this place

Last updated Aug 2, 2026

Herne is a mid-sized city in the heart of Germany’s Ruhr region, home to about 156,000 people. Unlike some of its neighbors, parts of Herne escaped the heavy bombing of World War II, leaving a legacy of handsome Wilhelminian-era architecture in the Herne-Mitte district. The city grew rapidly during the 19th-century coal and steel boom and is now charting a new future beyond heavy industry.

Today, Herne offers visitors a look at authentic Ruhr-area life. It’s a practical and well-connected base with a compact, walkable center, good public transit, and a developing network of cycling paths. While it may not top typical tourist itineraries, its historical core and local events give travelers a genuine sense of the region’s evolution.

Planning Tips

Last updated Aug 2, 2026
  • Airport arrivals — Düsseldorf Airport is the closest international gateway, reachable in about 40 minutes by direct regional train; Dortmund Airport is nearer but requires more connections.
  • Public transport tickets — buy at station machines or from bus drivers. A single A2 ticket lasts 90 minutes, and group day passes cover up to five people.
  • Night transit — buses and the U35 line run through the night on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, which is handy for evening plans.
  • Car navigation — if driving, check traffic reports before crossing the Herne motorway junction on weekdays to avoid delays.
  • Bike rental — bicycles can be rented from local dealers or via the Metropolradruhr stations for flexible city exploration.
