About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Hengyang sits along the middle reaches of the Xiang River, south of sacred Mount Heng in Hunan province. Known as the 'Wild Goose City' for the migrating flocks that once rested here, it is the second-largest city in the province and a historically significant crossroads. The fertile Hengyang Basin produces abundant fish and rice, while rich deposits of coal, zinc, and lead have shaped its role as an emerging industrial center.

The city’s long history stretches back millennia, from early Stone Age settlements through its time as a strategic stronghold during the Warring States period and a vital traffic hub in the Second Sino-Japanese War. Today, Hengyang balances its industrial character with riverside scenery and pockets of older culture spread across five urban districts. Visitors typically use it as a gateway to the region, especially for reaching Mount Heng (Nanyue), which lies in its own district to the north.
