About this place
Hefei is the capital and largest city of Anhui Province, located in central Anhui west of Chaohu Lake. Situated between the Huai River plain and the Yangtze River basin, Hefei has historically served as a crossroads linking eastern and central China. With a population of more than 9 million, it functions as the province’s political, economic, and educational center. Over recent decades, Hefei has transformed from a mid-sized administrative city into a notable hub for science and technology, hosting major national research institutions, universities, and technology parks.
Modern Hefei is characterized by broad roads, expanding residential districts, and large commercial areas. Newer zones like the Binhu New District illustrate the city’s ongoing urban expansion. Its high-speed rail network connects Hefei to Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan, Beijing, and other major cities within just a few hours. While Hefei is not widely known as a tourist destination and is often used by travelers as a transit point for exploring central Anhui—including Chaohu Lake and cultural attractions in nearby counties—it does offer pleasant parks, gardens, and local experiences that can fill a day or two before moving on.

Planning Tips
- Hefei has two major train stations — Hefei South (south of the city center) handles most high-speed trains, while Hefei Railway Station (north) handles conventional trains. They are connected by Metro Line 1 (journey about 30–40 minutes, ¥3)
- The Hefei Metro has four lines (as of 2021) with English service available when buying tickets; it's a convenient way to get around the city
- Bike-sharing services like Mobike and HelloBike are widely available, but activation requires a Chinese bank account, Chinese cell number, and passport
- Online maps (e.g., Google Maps) can help navigate bus routes in English and pinyin, but be prepared for very crowded buses during rush hours
- Consider Hefei a practical base for day trips to Chaohu Lake or cultural attractions in surrounding counties rather than expecting a dense set of city sights
