About this place
Hebron is an ancient city in the southern West Bank, deeply revered in the Abrahamic faiths as the traditional burial place of the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and their wives. The city’s heart is the Cave of the Patriarchs (Ibrahimi Mosque), a site of profound religious significance for Muslims and Jews. In 2017, Hebron’s Old Town was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Today, the city is defined by a unique and complex division. It is split into two sectors: H1, under full Palestinian control, and H2, under Israeli control, where a small Jewish community lives alongside a larger Palestinian population. This reality makes Hebron a place where the political situation is not a distant headline but an everyday, visible fact, particularly around the Old City.

Planning Tips
- Plan your approach — Determine whether you will enter from the Israeli/Jewish side or the Palestinian side, as this dictates bus routes, checkpoints, and first impressions.
- Dress respectfully — Modest attire covering shoulders and knees is essential on the Palestinian side, in line with the city’s conservative cultural norms.
- Use a reliable guide — To navigate the city’s complexity and history effectively without being misled by touts, consider booking a professional tour or arranging a guide through your accommodation.
- Clarify all taxi fares upfront — Always agree on the price with a taxi driver before getting in, as meters are not commonly used.
