About this place
Havana (Spanish: La Habana) is the capital of Cuba and a city that captivates visitors with its music, history, culture, architecture, and monuments. Founded by the Spanish in 1519, it preserves some of the oldest standing stone fortifications in the Americas. While many beautiful buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries have been deteriorating since the 1950s, this has created a romantic atmosphere of a bygone era that is unique to Havana.
Since Cuba reopened to tourism in the 1990s, Havana has become a popular destination once again. The Old Town (La Habana Vieja), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a must-see experience with its mix of restored and timeworn buildings. Modern Havana retains its lively spirit, with bustling street life along the Malecón waterfront and the Prado promenade.

Planning Tips
- Get cash in advance: ATMs and currency exchange services at the airport and in the city can be unreliable, so bring enough hard currency (Euros or US dollars) for your stay.
- Accommodation areas: Old Havana (lively, busy), Central Havana (slightly quieter, some seedy parts), and Vedado (quieter, greener, with large hotels and casas particulares).
- Transport: Official taxis cost about US$1/km; shared colectivos are cheaper but follow set routes. Walking is the best way to explore the Old Town.
- Dining: Paladares (private restaurants) often charge a service fee — always ask before ordering. Many restaurants don't open for breakfast, so arrange it at your casa particular.
- Cigars and alcohol: Buy tobacco and rum at stores in downtown Havana rather than airside at the airport, where bottles have been reported as improperly sealed.
- Stay safe at night: Stick to well-lit areas like El Malecón; avoid walking in dark streets of Centro Habana after dark.
- Visa and entry: U.S. citizens face an almost total travel ban, so check current regulations before planning a visit.
