About this place

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang Province in northeast China, a city shaped by its Russian heritage and famously frigid winters. Founded in 1897 as a Russian survey camp for the Trans-Siberian Railway, it grew rapidly after the October Revolution when White Russian exiles and Jewish communities settled here, leaving a lasting mark on the architecture, food, and cultural fabric. Today, it's a bustling metropolis of over 10 million people, known as the "Ice City" for its spectacular Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival each winter.

Beyond the cold, Harbin offers a vibrant summer scene with breezy, tree-lined streets and outdoor dining that spills into the late hours. The city's layout tilts 45 degrees to follow the Songhua River, with the main thoroughfare Dazhi Street dividing the popular Daoli District (home to pedestrian-friendly Zhongyang Dajie) and the historic Daowai District. Across the river lies Jiangbei, where Sun Island is being developed into a one-stop tourist destination.

Harbin's cuisine is hearty and distinctive, blending influences from Russia, Mongolia, Korea, and China — think stews, dumplings, Chinese BBQ, and local versions of Russian dishes. While the city has faced economic challenges common to northeast China's industrial cities, its universities, rich history, and unique seasonal attractions make it a memorable destination for adventurous travelers.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Dress in layers during winter: Bring more clothes than you think you'll need; thermal underlayers, a heavy coat, hat, gloves, and scarf are essential.
  • Carry Chinese characters for addresses: Taxi drivers don't speak English; show them written Chinese for your destination.
  • Always insist on the meter in taxis (saying qǐng dǎ biǎo); negotiate a price only as a last resort.
  • Check which train station your train arrives or departs from — Harbin has multiple stations including Harbin Station, Harbin West, and Harbin East.
  • Avoid fish from the Songhua River: It was contaminated by benzene in November 2005; choose fish from surrounding lakes instead.
  • Learn basic numbers and phrases for purchasing bus fares (¥1 or ¥2) and navigating menus; English is not widely spoken.
  • If visiting the ice festival, confirm exact dates (varies yearly; runs early January until warm weather).
