About this place

Last updated Aug 22, 2026

Harar is an ancient walled city in eastern Ethiopia and a UNESCO World Heritage site. For centuries it has been a major commercial hub, linked by trade routes between the Ethiopian highlands and the Horn of Africa. Known in Arabic as the City of Saints, it holds deep Islamic heritage and is often called the fourth holiest city of Sunni Islam, home to nearly a hundred mosques and many more shrines.

The city is also tied to the origins of two globally beloved plants: coffee and khat. Harar's historic core, the Jugol, invites slow exploration on foot, and residents are famously welcoming. Expect frequent, genial greetings as you wander the narrow alleys.

Planning Tips

Last updated Aug 22, 2026
  • Fly to Dire Dawa for comfort — The easiest (though pricier) route from Addis Ababa is a flight to Dire Dawa followed by a private car or shared minibus to Harar.
  • Learn a greeting in Amharic — A simple selam goes a long way in a city where residents frequently greet and chat with visitors.
  • Budget extra time for interactions — Walking a single block can involve several greetings and conversations; Harar is best enjoyed unhurried.
  • Base yourself in Dire Dawa if needed — For more comfortable hotels with reliable water, consider staying in Dire Dawa and day-tripping to Harar.
