About this place
Hamburg's city centre is formed by the historic districts of Altstadt and Neustadt, along with the modern HafenCity quarter immediately south of Altstadt. This area packs in most of Hamburg's iconic sights — from the artificial pond of Binnenalster in front of the city hall to the rows of densely packed warehouses hovering over narrow canals in the Speicherstadt ("warehouse town"), a UNESCO World Heritage site. HafenCity has completely transformed the old port, now filled with striking modern architecture and offering brilliant views over the river Elbe.
The city centre is both a tourist hub and a major shopping area, home to the offices of large companies as well as high-end restaurants and other establishments catering to well-off locals and travelers. While the nightlife here is limited compared to the famous St. Pauli district, you'll find more air and greenery in nearby Altona (with its long riverbank) and the city's North, which includes the large lake Aussenalster and the Stadtpark, the largest park in Hamburg.

Planning Tips
- Arrive by train at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof — the S1 S-Bahn line connects directly from Hamburg Fuhlsbüttel airport to the station.
- For parking, use the lots on and around Deichtorplatz, a few blocks south of Hauptbahnhof and the shopping district.
- For budget dining, check the food court in the central station (fresh fish, sushi, fast food) or the top-floor restaurants in Galeria and Karstadt department stores for affordable meals.
- If you need budget accommodation, look outside the city centre for more variety — the centre's hotels are mostly mid-range to upscale.
- Be aware that the nightlife scene is concentrated in St. Pauli, so plan accordingly if you're looking for evening entertainment.
