About this place
Hakodate is a historic port city on the southern tip of Hokkaidō, facing the Tsugaru Strait. As one of the first Japanese ports opened to foreign trade, it blends 19th-century Western architectural influences with classic Japanese harbor-town character. The city is compact and well-served by streetcars, making it easy for visitors to explore on foot.
With a population of roughly 240,000, Hakodate is Hokkaidō's third-largest city but retains a calm, walkable feel. It is well known among Japanese domestic travelers for its fresh seafood, distinctive squid-based ramen, and nighttime views from Mount Hakodate. For international visitors, it offers a rewarding mix of history, food, and scenery that stands apart from Honshu's major tourist centers.
