About this place
Hagen is a green city in North Rhine-Westphalia, where 42 percent of the municipal area is covered by woods and forests, and four rivers — the Ruhr, Lenne, Volme, and Ennepe — converge within the city. Its location between the industrialized Ruhr area and the hilly Sauerland region gives it a distinct character as both a former industrial hub and a gateway to nature.
Once a significant railway junction whose population peaked at 230,000 in 1975, Hagen has since experienced a demographic shift tied to the steel and coal crisis.
