About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Gyeongju, often called the "museum without walls," was the capital of the Silla Kingdom for nearly a millennium and remains one of South Korea's most historically rich destinations. Ancient tombs, temple ruins, and palace sites are woven directly into the fabric of the modern city, where traditional tiled roofs still crown buildings and forested hillsides overlook rice fields.

The city center is compact and walkable, while the Bomunho Resort area east of downtown offers lakeside luxury hotels. Most visitors are domestic or from elsewhere in East Asia, giving international travelers a chance to explore world-class heritage with a distinctly local feel.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Cycle through the historic center — Rent a bike near the express bus terminal for about ₩7,000 per day and explore the central sights at your own pace. Many trails and parks are bike-accessible, making this the most enjoyable way to cover ground.
  • Stroll around Bomunho Lake — Walk or bike along the lakeside paths at Bomunho Resort, home to Korea's tallest fountain. The illuminated water jets are especially striking at night.
  • Visit Hangover Soup Street — If you sample the local rice wine, follow it up with haejangguk, a hearty pork spine and blood stew served in the city's dedicated soup alley.
  • Take a guided bus tour — For a hassle-free day, hop on a guided tour covering the main attractions. Entrance fees are included, and you'll skip the wait for public buses, though timing at each stop can be tight.
  • Shop for Silla-style crafts — Market stalls and souvenir shops sell reproductions of ancient ceramics and metalwork. Street vendors near Bulguksa often offer better deals if you buy multiple items.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Donggung and Wolji (Anapji) — This palace and pond complex, built in the 7th century after the unification of the Three Kingdoms, is one of Gyeongju's most beautiful spots. Visit at night when the grounds glow with decorative lighting.
  • Royal tombs and burial mounds — Scattered throughout the city and surrounding hills, these large grass-covered mounds include the Gwoereung Tomb, Oreung Tombs Park, and the underwater tomb of King Munmu.
  • Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto — South Korea's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring exquisite Silla-era Buddhist architecture and a serene mountaintop grotto with a monumental Buddha statue.
  • Gyeongju National Park — Encompassing Mount Namsan and its many Buddhist shrines, temples, and stone carvings, this park offers both cultural treasures and forested hiking trails.
  • Cheomseongdae Observatory — One of the oldest surviving astronomical observatories in East Asia, located within walking distance of the Daereungwon tomb complex and the Hwangnidan-gil cafe street.

  • Late September through early November — This is the prime window, with average temperatures around 17°C, low rainfall, and clear autumn skies. Ideal for outdoor sightseeing and temple hikes.
  • April to late June — Spring offers similar comfort levels, with temperatures averaging 18°C and minimal precipitation. Cherry blossoms and fresh greenery enhance the historic landscapes.
  • Avoid July and August — Summer brings muggy heat, heavy monsoon rains, and the least comfortable conditions for exploring tombs, temples, and park trails.
  • Winter can work for budget travelers — December through February sees chilly weather with lows around -3°C, but fewer visitors and lower accommodation prices appeal to those who don't mind the cold.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Stop at a tourist kiosk first — Offices at the bus terminal and train station provide excellent English-language maps, brochures, and hiking advice. Staff can help plan short visits efficiently.
  • Use a T-money or Mybi card on buses — Local city buses cost ₩1,500 per ride and accept Seoul T-money and Busan Mybi cards, though Daegu and Daejeon transit cards are not supported.
  • Taxi from Singyeongju station — The KTX station is about 15 minutes outside town; buses 50, 60, 61, 70, 203, and 700 connect to the center, or you can take a taxi directly to the Express Bus Terminal area.
  • Taste Hwangnam ppang warm — The best place to try Gyeongju's famous red-bean pastry is the bakery just east of Cheonmacheong (Flying Horse Tomb) Park, where they're served fresh from the oven.
  • Book splurge stays at Bomunho — For a more resort-style visit, the lakeside area east of downtown offers hotels like the Hilton and Hyundai, with walking paths and fountain shows on your doorstep.
