About this place
Gwangju, a metropolitan city in South Korea’s South Jeolla province, blends a rich cultural heritage with a distinctly modern and youthful energy. Known historically as the breadbasket of the country, the entire Jeolla region, and Gwangju in particular, enjoys a stellar culinary reputation, promising visitors flavorful food that is often more affordable than in other major Korean cities.
The city presents a clean, contemporary face, exemplified by its massive U-Square bus terminal and expansive entertainment districts, yet it also holds deep historical significance. Gwangju is widely recognized in South Korea for the May 18 Democratic Uprising of 1980, a pivotal event that cemented the city's identity as a center of the nation's democracy movement. This proud spirit is palpable and contributes to the city’s vibrant character.

Planning Tips
- Pick a strategic base: The old downtown district of Chungjang-ro and Geumnam-ro streets is the most accessible area for new visitors and a great base for starting your exploration. For business or a more western-style commercial area, consider Sangmu district.
- Use U-Square for intercity travel: The city's massive bus terminal is a central hub with frequent express buses to Seoul, taking about 3 to 4 hours.
- Master public transit payment: Intra-city buses and the subway both accept cash (₩1,400) or a slightly cheaper transportation card fare (₩1,250). The express bus 02 has a higher fare of ₩1,800.
- Rent a bicycle for free: Visit any metro station with your passport to borrow a city bike for the day; you will get your ID back upon the bike’s return.
- Get oriented by the mountain: Mt. Mudeungsan lies to the city's east and is visible from nearly everywhere, serving as a helpful natural compass.
- Stay hydrated but plan ahead: While tap water is technically drinkable, most residents boil it or buy bottled water. Find free spring water at local parks or at mountain springs.
