About this place
La Villa de Guadalupe is a deeply significant northern district of Mexico City, home to one of Roman Catholicism's most revered sites in Latin America. Situated in the Gustavo A. Madero borough at the base of Tepeyac Hill, this neighborhood revolves around the Basílica de Guadalupe complex, drawing pilgrims and visitors from around the world.
The area's identity is rooted in the 1531 apparition of the Virgin Mary to Saint Juan Diego, where her image was miraculously imprinted on his tilma, or apron. That relic is now displayed above the altar of the modern New Basilica. Founded in 1563, the town grew around the original shrine, the Old Basilica, which has since been restored and reopened for services alongside its newer counterpart.
