About this place

Pondicherry, also known as Puducherry, is a coastal city in Southern India where French colonial heritage meets Tamil culture. Often called The French Riviera of the East, it’s a compact destination that surprises many visitors: on one side of the central canal you’ll find Mediterranean-style villas, tree-lined boulevards, and bakeries, while the other side feels unmistakably Indian. Crossing the canal reveals two very different characters within a single city.

Once the largest French colony in India, Pondicherry still carries that legacy in its architecture, street names, and a handful of French-speaking elders, though English has largely replaced French as the common second language. Tamil is the main tongue, and English-speaking travelers will get by easily. The city invites a slower pace — it’s a place for unhurried exploration, seaside evenings, and experiencing a genuinely unique East–West blend.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Two-wheelers are best — Rent a scooter (around ₹300/day) or bicycle (₹40–50/day) from shops on Mission Street or MG Road; cars are impractical on narrow lanes.
  • Carry ID for rentals — Some rental shops require identification documents and a small advance; inspect vehicles thoroughly before renting.
  • Use PTDC tourist buses — The Pondicherry Tourism Development Corporation runs daily services covering major sights, an economical way to tour if you prefer not to drive.
  • Bring snacks on road trips — The Bangalore route has limited dining options; pack food for the 5–6 hour drive from Bengaluru.
  • Keep passport handy — Carry your passport with a note of your travel consultant’s number; avoid upfront payments to agents or unauthorized currency exchanges.
