About this place
Gulu is the largest city in Northern Uganda and the economic and administrative heart of the sub-region. It is a city on a post-conflict recovery journey, moving forward from its history with the Lord’s Resistance Army war, and as of 2026 it is focused on peacebuilding and reconciliation.
Acholi is the dominant local language, spoken alongside English. The growing presence of NGO workers and travelers has brought new energy, and friendly local business owners are expanding hotels and restaurants. The city may not yet be the most polished destination in Uganda, but it has a distinct charm and the feel of a community confidently looking ahead.
