About this place
Gujangbagh, more widely known as Khotan (Hotan), sits along the southern Jade Branch of the Silk Road in China's Xinjiang Province. Once the center of a Buddhist empire, the city's ancient capital of Yoktan lies about 10 km west of the modern center. Today, Khotan remains a key oasis on the desert route, with a paved cross-desert highway linking it to Kuqa and road connections stretching west to Kashgar and east toward Dunhuang.
The region has been synonymous with jade for over two millennia, and it remains one of the few areas in the world where both black and white jade are found. Khotan is also a traditional center of Uyghur carpet weaving, giving visitors a chance to browse locally crafted textiles alongside one of Xinjiang's most authentic bazaar experiences.

Things to Do
- Browse the Sunday bazaar — a sprawling market atmosphere where you can hunt for Khotan's famed jade, hand-woven carpets, and traditional Uyghur clothing. Be ready to bargain for higher-value pieces.
- Visit the Sunday animal bazaar — a short bus ride beyond the main market, offering a lively, dusty glimpse into regional livestock trading.
- Eat your way through the night market — a massive indoor food hall south of the central square with countless Uyghur dishes, sweets, and modest prices.

Best Time to Visit
- Late April through September — this long warm season provides the most comfortable weather, with low precipitation and abundant sunshine for exploring markets and desert scenery.
- Avoid the short winter — outside the travel window, temperatures can dip sharply, and the stark desert cold offers fewer sightseeing comforts.
- Plan around bazaar days — the Sunday bazaar and animal market are strongest draws; aligning your visit with a Sunday amplifies the local experience.

Planning Tips
- Write destinations in Uyghur — even Chinese-speaking taxi drivers may not know many out-of-town sights; ask hotel staff to note landmarks in Uyghur script to ease navigation.
- Carry cash and patience — airport taxi fares are shared and negotiated (roughly ¥20–30 per person) despite meters, so confirm the price before boarding.
- Check lodging licenses in advance — many cheaper hotels lack permits for foreigners; booking a mid-range hotel or verifying foreigner acceptance helps avoid surprises.
