About this place
Guiyang (贵阳; Guìyáng) is the capital of Guizhou province, China. While not the most spectacular of Chinese cities, it serves as an excellent introduction to the history, culture, and natural splendor of Guizhou and China's southwest. It is drastically cheaper than more touristed and developed provinces, making it an appealing base for exploring mountains, caves, rivers, and minority cultures.
The city enjoys a pleasant subtropical monsoon humid climate with warm winters and cool summers. Guiyang's food scene is a highlight, with spicy local dishes, bustling night markets, and distinctive minority cuisines. The metro system (GYURT) has several lines connecting the main train stations, airport, and key districts, making it easy to get around. Taxis are also plentiful and affordable for short trips.
As the commercial hub of Guizhou, Guiyang offers great access to nearby attractions like the renowned Huangguoshu Waterfall via Anshun, and to Zunyi to the north. The city itself provides a gateway to experiencing the rich ethnic diversity of the region, including the traditions of the Miao, Dong, and Buyi peoples.

Planning Tips
- From Longdongbao Airport, catch a taxi (¥60 flat rate) or the airport shuttle bus (¥10) to downtown; both take 15–20 minutes. To save money, take the bus and then a short taxi ride from the bus stop.
- For high-speed rail, be sure to check which station you're arriving at or departing from: Guiyang North (Guiyangbei) serves most high-speed trains, while Guiyang East also handles some. The conventional station is Guiyang Station.
- Buses from the long-distance bus station (Jinyang) offer direct routes to Anshun (60–90 min), Zunyi (2 hours), and even Guilin and Guangzhou.
- When taking motorcycle or scooter taxis, negotiate the price in advance (typically ¥10–15); the driver will likely not have a helmet available.
- To try excellent Guizhou cuisine at reasonable prices, seek out Siheyuan (四合院) — no English sign, located in the alley opposite the Protestant Church on Qianling Xilu.
- For the best Guiyang Style Beef Noodles, look for Huaxi Wang Jia Niuroufen, which operates a franchise chain across the province.
