About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Guilin is one of China’s most celebrated scenic destinations, famed for the dramatic limestone karst mountains that rise abruptly from rivers and rice paddies. The city itself is shaped by two rivers and four lakes, with tree-lined streets and steep, forested hills that give the downtown a distinctive, postcard-ready skyline.

As the hub for northern Guangxi, Guilin makes an excellent base for wider exploration. The region offers world-famous day trips such as the Longji rice terraces, the Li River (whose scenery appears on the ¥20 note), and the riverside town of Yangshuo. While tourism is the main industry and the city is noticeably cleaner and less polluted than many Chinese cities, visitors will also find a working mid-size city with bustling markets, public parks, and everyday neighbourhoods.

Things to Do

Last updated Jun 13, 2026
  • Take a boat trip or a scenic cruise on the Li River between Guilin and Yangshuo, passing some of the region’s most photogenic karst peaks.
  • Go rock climbing on the limestone cliffs that surround the city and the wider karst landscape — suitable for a range of skill levels.
  • Explore the Longji (Dragon’s Backbone) rice terraces in Longsheng, about a two-hour drive from Guilin, especially striking during the May–October growing season.
  • Rent a bicycle or take a local bus to explore Yangshuo, where countryside lanes lead past rice fields, bamboo groves, and riverside villages.
  • Taste rice noodles (mifen), the city’s signature dish, at a local shop away from the train station, and experiment with the table condiments and pickles.
  • Wander through Guilin’s central lakes and riverside parks — Ronghu, Shanhu, Guihu and Mulong Lake — linked by pleasant walking paths and illuminated after dark.
  • Visit Guilin Merryland World Resort, roughly a one-hour drive north of the city, for theme-park-style family entertainment.

Things to See

Last updated Jun 13, 2026
  • Elephant Trunk Hill, the city’s most iconic karst formation, where the rock arches into the Li River like a drinking elephant.
  • The Li River landscape — a scene from the river is printed on the back of the ¥20 banknote, and the twisting waterways and limestone pinnacles are a UNESCO-listed showcase of karst terrain.
  • Seven Star Park, a large city park that combines karst hills, stone bridges, walking trails, and the celebrated Crescent Moon Building restaurant.
  • Solitary Beauty Peak, a steep karst hill inside a walled area in the city, offering views over downtown Guilin from its summit.
  • Reed Flute Cave, a natural limestone cave famed for its coloured lighting and stalactite-filled chambers on the northwestern edge of the city.
  • Old-town quarters in surrounding villages such as Daxu, where traditional riverside architecture remains largely intact and visitor numbers are lower than in the city.
  • The Ling Canal, an ancient waterway north of the city that once connected the Yangtze and Pearl River systems and is surrounded by quiet countryside.

Best Time to Visit

See Ranked Windows ↑
  • Autumn (September to November) delivers the most reliable combination of mild temperatures, lower humidity, and reduced rainfall — ideal for outdoor sightseeing and river cruises.
  • A narrower window from mid-July to mid-August can offer warm, usable weather alongside lush green landscapes, though you should expect high humidity, frequent showers, and a cloud cover around 69.7%.
  • Spring (March to May) brings warming temperatures and blooming vegetation, but also the buildup of monsoon rains; late spring is often wet and damp.
  • Winter (December to February) is cooler and drier, with fewer crowds and lower accommodation prices, though grey and drizzly days are common and nights can feel cold.
  • Avoid the first week of October (National Day holiday) and Chinese New Year if possible, as domestic travel surges, prices spike, and attractions become extremely congested.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 13, 2026
  • Visa-free access of up to 144 hours is available for ASEAN nationals on approved group tours arriving and departing via Guilin Liangjiang International Airport, with travel limited to Guilin, Yangshuo and Longsheng.
  • Buy a local tourist map (roughly ¥5) to navigate bus routes and walking paths — buses are capped at ¥2 per ride, and all routes starting with 5# are free.
  • Use public bus 100 from Guilin North station or bus 22 from Guilin West station to reach the city centre for ¥2 instead of negotiating with taxi touts.
  • High-speed trains connect Guilin to major cities: about 3 hours from Guangzhou and Shenzhen, around 7 hours from Chengdu, and less than 3 hours from Nanning.
  • When ordering local food, tell restaurant staff if you want dishes authentically spicy — otherwise kitchens tend to serve very bland food for visitors.
  • Guard valuables carefully around the bus and train stations, where pickpocketing is frequently reported; a money belt is strongly recommended.
  • Consider hiring a private driver for ¥100–200 for a full day to reach outlying sights — many hotels can arrange this even if you don’t speak Mandarin.
