About this place

Last updated Jul 13, 2026

Guarujá occupies Ilha de Santo Amaro, a large island about 87 kilometres from the city of São Paulo. Nicknamed "The Pearl of the Atlantic," it transformed from a largely unexplored island into a beach resort for wealthy Paulistas in the late 19th century and became a full municipality in 1947. Tourism boomed in the 1970s and 80s, and the city is now one of the busiest holiday destinations in São Paulo state.

The central beaches like Pitangueiras and Astúrias draw visitors with their blue waters, while surfers head to Tombo beach for its consistent waves. Away from the urban stretches, quieter spots such as Guaiúba and Iporanga offer lush vegetation, waterfalls, and a more relaxed pace. History lovers can explore the 16th-century Barra Grande Fortress or the old whale-oil plant at Armação das Baleias.
