About this place
Guangzhou (historically known as Canton) is the capital of Guangdong Province in southern China and a key city in the Pearl River Delta region. With a history spanning roughly 2,200 years, it has long served as an international trading hub and was the only Chinese port open to foreign trade for much of the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, it ranks among China's most prosperous and cosmopolitan cities, blending towering skyscrapers in districts like Tianhe with traditional neighborhoods in Liwan and Yuexiu.
As the birthplace of Cantonese cuisine, the city is a celebrated food destination, known for dim sum, barbecue, and fresh seafood. Culturally, Guangzhou offers a rich mix of historic temples, colonial-era architecture on Shamian Island, world-class museums, and modern landmarks like the Canton Tower. The city is also home to China's largest urban park, Baiyun Mountain, providing a natural escape just north of the center.
Guangzhou's southern subtropical climate brings warm, humid weather year-round, with the most pleasant conditions in spring and autumn. The city is well-connected domestically and internationally, with a modern metro system, high-speed rail links (including to Hong Kong in under an hour), and an international airport offering visa-free transit for many nationalities.

Planning Tips
- Visa and entry — Citizens of 54 countries may obtain a 240-hour (10-day) visa waiver for transit through Guangzhou to a third country. Check current requirements before traveling.
- Getting from Hong Kong — Frequent high-speed trains connect Hong Kong West Kowloon to Guangzhou South in under an hour. Direct ferries and cross-boundary buses also operate from Hong Kong International Airport.
- Public transport — Purchase a Yang Cheng Tong stored-value card for convenience on metro, buses, and some taxis. The metro is the most efficient way to get around; have destinations written in Chinese for taxi drivers.
- Accommodation timing — Avoid or book far in advance during the Canton Fair. Hotels are concentrated in Yuexiu and Tianhe districts.
- Money and ATMs — ATMs accepting foreign cards are common in malls and tourist areas. Bank of China ATMs are a reliable option for foreign cards. Always keep your passport handy for currency exchange.
- Staying safe — Keep valuables secure in crowded areas, use official taxis, and change money at banks. Traffic does not reliably yield to pedestrians, so cross with caution.
- Packing — Bring light, breathable clothing for humid weather, and an umbrella or rain jacket during typhoon season (June–September).
