About this place

Last updated Jun 9, 2026

Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco and Mexico's second-largest city, offers a relaxed colonial atmosphere distinct from the hustle of Mexico City. Often referred to by its residents as "Tapatíos," the city blends historic charm with a modern, growing economy driven by electronics, pharmaceuticals, and fashion. While its architecture largely dates from the independence period, the Centro Histórico is the main draw for visitors, filled with colonial-era buildings and significant mural paintings by the famed artist José Clemente Orozco.

Beyond the historic core, Guadalajara is a city of distinct neighborhoods and suburbs. The Sector Juárez area is a shopper's paradise with malls and lively streets like Chapultepec and Zona Rosa, while nearby suburbs like Tlaquepaque and Tonalá offer a glimpse of old Mexico with their vibrant arts, crafts, pottery, and street markets. Zapopan offers a mix of modern shopping, old-fashioned downtown charm, and large natural areas like the Bosque La Primavera, making the greater metropolitan area a rich and varied destination for all types of travelers.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 9, 2026
  • Getting around: The Mi Tren (subway) and Mi Macro (BRT) are the fastest ways to travel long distances, costing around M$9.50 per ride. A public transport card can be purchased at subway stations for M$30 and works on all modes of public transit.
  • Airport transfers: Uber is not allowed to pick up at the airport; walk to the nearby UPS center outside the restricted zone to hail one. Alternatively, a licensed taxi can be booked at a booth inside the terminal.
  • Embracing local food: Sample regional specialties like birria (a savory stew) and tortas ahogadas ("drowned sandwiches") at the Mercado Libertad food court or restaurants near the Nueve Esquinas area.
  • Safety in numbers: While the city is generally safe, remain aware of your surroundings in busy areas, as purse-snatching can occur. Avoid the area near the Old Bus Station (Central Vieja) on foot.
  • Planning for uncertainty: Keep a supply of drinking water and snacks on hand in case of unexpected events like severe weather or civil disruptions that could temporarily close shops or restrict movement.
