About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, has emerged from decades of conflict as a city dramatically rebuilt and revitalized. Once labeled the "most destroyed city in the world," it now features tree-lined boulevards, modern apartment buildings, and a renewed sense of civic life.

Founded as a Russian fort in 1818, Grozny grew rapidly in the early 20th century on the strength of its oil reserves. Its complex 20th-century history includes the wartime deportation of the Chechen people and the devastating wars of the 1990s and 2000s. Today, visitors find a city focused on the future, with a compact center offering shops, cafes, and a decidedly local atmosphere.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Arrive by air from Moscow — Flights connect Grozny with Moscow's Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports, providing the most straightforward entry.
  • Use a car to get around — With the tram system destroyed and trolleybuses not fully redeveloped, a private car or the Islam taxi service is the most practical option.
  • Budget for a unique experience — While goods are generally cheap, don't expect familiar Western products; local crafts like swords and daggers make memorable souvenirs.
  • Book accommodation carefully — The Hotel Arena City is a noted modern option, but overall hotel choices are limited and new properties are still being built.
