About this place

Gondar is a historic royal city in northern Ethiopia’s Amhara region, often called the "Camelot of Africa." For centuries it served as the seat of emperors and princesses — from Suseneos and Fasiledes to Empress Taitu — leaving behind a remarkable collection of 17th‑ and 18th‑century castles and palaces.

The centerpiece is Fasil Ghebbi, the Royal Enclosure, but the city also rewards visitors with lively markets, a scenic lakeside escape at Gorgora, and easy connections to the Simien Mountains. Gondar blends deep imperial history with the energy of a modern Ethiopian town.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Fly to shortcut the bus — domestic flights can avoid the all‑day road journey from Addis Ababa.
  • Book Timkat accommodation early — Gondar is one of the few places in Ethiopia where rooms fill completely around Epiphany.
  • Navigating town — blue‑and‑white minibuses, horse‑drawn garis, and inexpensive tuktuks (bajaj) make getting around easy and affordable.
  • Protect against guide scams — only pay for Simien Mountain trips through a shopfront operator or after a trusted recommendation.
  • Carry cash — ATMs from Dashen Bank and Awash Bank accept Mastercard and Visa, but cash remains essential for smaller purchases and fares.
