About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Goma, the capital of North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a city of dramatic rebirth. Situated on the border with Rwanda along the shores of Lake Kivu, it serves as a gateway to some of Africa’s most compelling natural wonders. The town was fundamentally reshaped in 2002 when lava from the nearby Nyiragongo volcano engulfed much of the city center, and since then, it has been a landscape of constant construction and resilience.

Beyond the city limits, the attractions are extraordinary. Goma is the primary base for ascending the Nyiragongo volcano and offers access to relatively affordable mountain gorilla tracking in Virunga National Park. The city itself provides a vibrant, if sometimes chaotic, introduction to Congolese culture and nightlife.
