About this place

Last updated Jun 9, 2026

Glasgow is Scotland's largest city, a vibrant and historic destination on the River Clyde in the Central Belt. Once a powerhouse of shipbuilding and trade, the city underwent a remarkable cultural and economic revival from the 1990s, emerging as one of Britain's most successful examples of urban reinvention. Today, Glasgow is a lively, year-round destination known for its stunning Victorian architecture (much of it scrubbed to reveal its original deep-red sandstone), world-class museums, thriving music and arts scenes, and excellent visitor amenities across all price brackets.

With a population of over 600,000 (over 1.2 million in the Greater Glasgow area), the city offers a dynamic blend of history and modernity. Its medieval heart lies in the East End around the cathedral, while the elegant Victorian grid of the City Centre holds most attractions, shops, and entertainment. The prosperous, bohemian West End is home to the University of Glasgow, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and a wealth of cafes and independent stores. The city also enjoys a strong cultural calendar, with festivals spanning music, film, comedy, and the arts throughout the year.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 9, 2026
  • The city center is very walkable; public transport is the best way to reach the West End and other districts — consider a Roundabout day ticket for unlimited Subway and train travel after 9 AM.
  • Avoid driving into the city center; use park-and-ride at outlying railway stations (like Shields Road) or one of the many multi-story car parks.
  • For those arriving by air, the Glasgow Airport Express bus (every 10–15 minutes) is a fast 15-minute ride to the city center.
  • A first-class dining city: from budget-friendly fish-and-chip shops and Yemeni cafes to Michelin-worthy contemporary Scots cuisine.
  • Book accommodation in advance during major festivals and events, especially the 2026 Commonwealth Games (July 23 – August 2).
