Gifu, the capital of Gifu Prefecture, is a compact city with deep-rooted traditions, best known for the centuries-old practice of ukai (cormorant fishing) on the Nagara River. A short train ride from Nagoya, it makes an accessible day trip or a convenient base for exploring the wider region. The city's handcrafted paper umbrellas and lanterns reflect generations of artisanal skill, giving its shopping streets a distinctly local character.

Things to Do

  • Ukai (cormorant fishing) — Watch the 1,300-year-old tradition on the Nagara River between May and October. Viewing boats embark in the early evening, with the fishing spectacle itself beginning after dark.
  • Cycling around downtown — Take advantage of rent-a-cycle stations near JR Gifu Station, City Hall, and Gifu Park. The flat city center and riverside paths make it an easy way to explore for just ¥100 per day.
  • Hop between local bars — Yanagase and the area near Meitetsu-Gifu Station offer welcoming, character-filled spots. Join the friendly mix of locals and visitors at Bier Hall or catch live music at Bar Leon.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Use Nagoya as your transport hub — Frequent Tokaido Line trains (¥450) and Meitetsu services (¥540) provide more options than long-distance buses or the Shinkansen stop at Gifu-Hashima.
  • Plan ukai in advance — The season runs May 11 to October 15. Boats serving dinner board earlier; if you just want to see the fishing, a later embarkation time works. The show ends by 21:00, allowing a timely return to Nagoya.
  • Pick up a rental bike — For just ¥100 per day, you can cycle to Gifu Park and along the Nagara River, saving you a long walk from the station.
