About this place
Pella municipality, set in Greece's Central Macedonia region, is anchored by the modern town of Giannitsa, but the real draw is the village of Pella — built directly atop the ancient capital of Macedon. This is the birthplace of Alexander the Great and his father Philip II, once the richest and most powerful city in the kingdom.
Today, visitors come to explore the extensive archaeological site, where excavations begun in the 1950s continue to reveal the grandeur of the Macedonian capital. The site is particularly famous for its stunning pebble-mosaic floors, with scenes of lion-griffins and Dionysus riding a leopard.

- Ancient Pella archaeological site — walk through the remains of the Macedonian capital, birthplace of Alexander the Great. Excavations have been ongoing since the 1950s, unearthing large sections of the ancient city.
