About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Gelsenkirchen is a city of about 260,000 people in the Ruhr region of North Rhine-Westphalia, near Düsseldorf and Cologne. Once the industrial heart of Germany powered by coal mining, the area was heavily bombed during World War II and later faced economic challenges as mining declined. Today, Gelsenkirchen is refining its image by promoting industrial culture — old refineries have been remodelled into event halls and ice rinks, bike paths follow former rail lines, and art created from old machinery expresses the city's evolving identity.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Use public transport — Trams 301, 302, and 107 cover the city's key routes. Buy and validate tickets before boarding underground stations, and check if your event ticket already includes regional travel.
  • Avoid driving to the stadium on matchdays — Roads are congested and parking is extremely limited near VELTINS Arena; rely on trams instead.
  • Accessibility note — Most buses and trams are low-floor with ramps, but the tram stop directly at the arena is not wheelchair-accessible; use the Willy-Brandt-Allee stop instead, about a 10-minute walk away.
  • No rental e-scooters — The city banned commercial e-scooter rentals in 2024 due to vandalism and safety concerns; bring your own or use bike hire via the Metropolradruhr scheme.
