About this place
Gebze is a sprawling industrial city in Eastern Marmara, about 65 km east of Istanbul. It anchors a major manufacturing and technology corridor, home to large OSB industrial parks, a technical university, and the Tübitak research center. Historically, Gebze was a key transit point for travelers crossing the Gulf of Izmit by ferry from Eskihisar toward Yalova and Bursa.
Modern Gebze serves as both an industrial powerhouse and a practical stopover. While its center is largely contemporary, pockets of history include a 16th-century mosque complex and Hannibal's memorial. The nearby towns of Eskihisar and Hereke add small beaches, a castle, and a celebrated carpet-weaving tradition to the area.

Planning Tips
- Marmaray for local hops — the B1 suburban line runs every 15 minutes from central Istanbul to Gebze; the metro terminates at Pendik, so avoid it for this route.
- Avoid short-hop tickets on long-distance services — YHT fast trains and intercity buses from Ankara serve Gebze, but they often won't sell tickets for the short ride from Istanbul.
- Ferry options — IDO car ferries run 24 hours from Eskihisar to Topçular near Yalova (45 minutes, 570 TL per car in March 2025); foot-passenger ferries also operate between Hereke and Karamürsel.
- Hereke travel — regional trains and bus 500 (every 45 minutes) connect Gebze to Hereke; the train station is labeled Hereke YHT on timetables, though no YHT trains actually stop there.
- Mobile coverage — 4G is available from all Turkish carriers in Gebze and along the coast; 5G had not yet launched as of early 2022.
