About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Gdynia is a young, forward-looking port city on Poland's Baltic coast and part of the interconnected Tricity area alongside Gdańsk and Sopot. Built from scratch after World War I, the city showcases bold early-20th-century Modernist architecture and a deep-seated maritime identity that still defines it today. Its waterfront is a genuine highlight — a rare combination of a working cargo port, a naval base, long promenades, yacht marinas, and sandy public beaches.

Visitors are drawn to the contrast between the sleek, planned streets of the city center and the wooded cliffs and nature reserves that fringe the shoreline. While it lacks the medieval old towns of its neighbors, Gdynia offers a fresh, open-air experience centered on the sea, with two historic museum ships right in the harbor and plenty of space to explore the coast.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Relax on the beaches — Gdynia's sandy shores are clean, pleasant, and typically less crowded than those in neighboring Sopot or Gdańsk.
  • Walk the waterfront promenade — A 1.5-km-long promenade connects the city center marina to the beach in Redłowo, offering open sea views and yachting scenery along the way.
  • Catch a football match — Arka Gdynia play at Stadion GOSIR south of the center, with their own railway station making match-day access straightforward.
  • Take a boat trip on the bay — Hydrofoil and ship excursions run to Gdańsk Westerplatte, the Hel Peninsula, or around the port itself, giving a different perspective on the Baltic coast.
  • Explore the cliffs and nature reserve — The Kępa Redłowska Reservation Park features a cliff-lined shoreline and leafy walking trails next to the sea.
