About this place
Gdańsk is the historic capital of Pomerania, anchoring Poland's Baltic coast with a beautifully rebuilt Hanseatic old town and a stirring modern legacy. Once the largest and wealthiest city in the Polish Kingdom, it was reduced to rubble during World War II and later painstakingly restored, resulting in a colorful, canal-side center that draws visitors from across Europe.
Beyond its photogenic Long Market and riverside cranes, Gdańsk is known as the birthplace of the Solidarity movement, which played a decisive role in ending Communist rule. The city feels cosmopolitan and welcoming, with lively museums, a growing food scene, and easy tram or train connections to the neighboring resort towns of Sopot and Gdynia — together forming the 'Tri-City' area.

Planning Tips
- Use the Jakdojade app — buy and validate short-term tram and bus tickets easily; long-term passes require the FALA app.
- Book accommodation early for summer — Tri-City hotels fill up fast, so consider staying in Sopot or Gdynia for more options.
- Leave the car behind — public transport and the SKM train cover all major sights, and parking in the Main City is pricey and hard to find.
- Validate paper tickets immediately — punch your ticket as soon as you board; random checks are common and fines are steep.
- Try the local liqueurs — sample Goldwasser with its specks of gold leaf or the juniper-based Machandel vodka, both part of Gdańsk's liquid heritage.
