About this place
Gaziantep is a vibrant city in southeastern Turkey and the nation's fifth-largest urban center, home to over 1.7 million people. Known historically as Aintep, the city's name traces back to a fortress built around 1500 BC on the site of the present castle. Long a crossroads for trade routes, Gaziantep has weathered centuries of warfare and earthquakes, earning the honorific "Gazi" (veteran) for its resistance during the post-WWI period. Today, it's a sprawling industrial hub anchored by agriculture, particularly renowned for its pistachios.
Visitors are drawn primarily by the Zeugma Mosaic Museum, which houses a world-class collection of Roman mosaics, though the city also offers a historic bazaar, atmospheric mosques, and a rich culinary tradition. The 2023 earthquake caused significant damage in the region, but Gaziantep emerged as a key base for relief efforts, and its infrastructure has largely recovered, making it accessible to travelers.
With a continental climate, Gaziantep is a destination for those seeking a deep dive into Turkish history, culture, and cuisine—far from the beach resorts, yet full of its own distinct character.
