About this place
Garissa is the main town of Garissa district in eastern Kenya, sitting along the Tana River and serving as the gateway to the North Eastern province. As a predominantly Muslim and Somali community, the town offers a distinctive cultural character that differs markedly from Kenya’s coastal and highland destinations. It also functions as a hub for humanitarian food aid operations in the region.
The town's attractive side streets feature brightly-painted shop fronts and provide a window into Somali daily life without entering Somalia itself. Beyond the compact center, the landscape opens into thorn scrub where wildlife such as giraffes, baboons, warthogs, and dik-diks can be spotted. The culture, river setting, and surrounding bush create an off-the-beaten-path experience for curious travelers.

- Wildlife in the thorn scrub — Outside town, keep an eye out for eagles, dik-diks, baboons, giraffes, warthogs, and meerkats. Large herds of camels are frequently seen being moved between seasonal village sites by Somali families.

Best Time to Visit
- August 18 to November 13 — The most comfortable travel window of the year. Temperatures average around 27.3°C, humidity and rainfall are low, and roads are most reliably passable before the heavier rains.
- Dry months generally — Aim for the drier periods to avoid the unsurfaced roads becoming impassable. The desert climate means rain is infrequent but can severely disrupt travel beyond town when it arrives.
- Avoid peak rainy periods — While specific rainy months are not detailed, any extended rainfall makes regional roads difficult or impossible. Plan for flexibility if traveling outside the recommended window.

Planning Tips
- Getting there — Daily buses run from Nairobi on a good hard-surfaced road. The journey takes five to seven hours by car. Freedom Airline offers scheduled flights to Garissa's airfield as of late 2024.
- Getting around town — Boda bodas (motorcycle taxis) and regular taxis are easily hired within Garissa. For travel beyond town, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is strongly recommended, especially if rain is possible.
- Accommodation base — The Nomad Hotel is the most popular choice for international visitors, with a few other hotels on the main street offering air-conditioned rooms and en suite facilities. The Halgan, Hidig, and Ainulqamar provide additional basic options.
- Connectivity — Safaricom cellular service works well in Garissa and along much of the Nairobi road. Internet cafés are available, including one in the Halgan Hotel building and a reliable option in Jihan center, though they may close briefly during prayer times.
- Cultural awareness — The town is predominantly Muslim and Somali. Dress conservatively and be mindful of local customs. Visitors may be assumed to be UN personnel rather than tourists, and people are generally friendly.
