About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Ganja is the second-largest city in Azerbaijan and one of the oldest in the Caucasus. Its layered history — from ancient capital to regional hub — is visible in the Old City's 16th-century quarters, the archaeological site of Ancient Ganja, and the Russian-era Sloboda district. As the birthplace of the revered poet Nizami Gəncəvi, the city carries deep cultural pride.

Today, Ganja offers a grounded, local experience. Travelers can browse a renowned carpet trade, taste unique regional dishes, and unwind in leafy parks or traditional tea houses. Its position on the east–west rail line makes it a practical stop on a wider Caucasus itinerary.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Overnight train to Baku — Save time and a hotel night by taking the daily sleeper train; it departs Ganja at 02:56 and arrives in Baku around 08:52.
  • Marshrutka travel to Tbilisi via Qazakh — Board an early Ganja–Qazakh marshrutka, then switch to a shared ride to the Red Bridge border crossing; from there, catch a marshrutka to Tbilisi, arriving by early afternoon.
  • Bottled water and tea culture — Stick to bottled water and embrace the local tea houses; they're a social hub and an easy way to cool off.
  • Respect local codes of honor — Familiarize yourself with qeyret, adat, and namus. Ganja's hospitality is genuine but comes with strong expectations around family and social behavior.
  • Budget for taxis — Short taxi trips around the city, including bus-station transfers, typically cost around 3 manat; negotiate longer rides in advance, or use a ride-sharing app.
