About this place
Gangneung is the largest coastal city in Gangwon Province, tucked between the Taebaek Mountains and the Sea of Japan (East Sea). Its geographic isolation helped preserve a distinct local culture, and the city gained international attention as the host of ice sports during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. The compact downtown is easily walkable, while beaches and mountain areas are a short taxi ride away.
Visitors come for the mix of seaside recreation and cultural sights. Gyeongpo Beach, Jeongdongjin, and Jumunjin each offer a different coastal experience, while the Daegwallyeong area inland provides a cooler, greener contrast. High-speed KTX trains connect Gangneung directly to Seoul in about two hours, making it a feasible weekend getaway.
