About this place
Fuzhou (福州), the capital of Fujian Province, is an old port city with a history stretching back to the Qin Dynasty. Once a major hub for the tea trade during the era of tea clippers, today it serves as the province's administrative center and a bustling hub for light industry. Nestled on the Min River, just a few kilometers inland from the sea, the city blends its rich maritime heritage with modern development.
Known across China as a "city of parks," Fuzhou features an extensive network of green spaces designed to offset its urban density. The historic core is anchored by "Three Lanes and Seven Alleys," one of China's largest preserved historic downtown districts, featuring over 200 residences from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Beyond the city, the surrounding hinterland offers mountains and waterfalls, while coastal areas like Changle and Pingtan Island boast sandy beaches.
With a distinct local culture and language (Fuzhou Hua), the city also has a strong connection to the global Chinese diaspora. Fuzhou is right across the straits from Taipei, and its outward-looking character is reflected in the many overseas communities that trace their ancestry here.
