About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Fukuyama is a major city in eastern Hiroshima Prefecture, situated along the San'yo Shinkansen line. Its position makes it an extremely convenient base for regional travel, with quick connections west to Hiroshima, east to Okayama and the Kansai region, and south toward Shikoku.

With a population approaching half a million, the city offers a blend of local industry, history, and modern commerce. While often overlooked by international visitors in favor of its more famous neighbors, Fukuyama provides a welcoming stop with authentic local culture and easy access to the scenic Seto Inland Sea coast.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Check your JR Pass route — if you hold a Japan Rail Pass, avoid booking Nozomi trains; plan to take a Hikari service or transfer at Okayama for the most direct route.
  • Use the multilingual tourist guide — the local tourist association provides a guide site in multiple languages, which is more helpful for planning than the city's official site.
  • Consider Fukuyama as a base — it is much closer to the historic merchant town of Kurashiki and the gardens of Okayama than to Hiroshima City, offering more diverse day-trip potential.
