Things to See
- El Escorial — a vast monastery and royal palace complex built for King Philip II, featuring austere royal chambers, an art-rich basilica, and the pantheon where most Spanish kings and queens are interred. Easily reached by Cercanías train from Madrid.
- Valle de los Caídos — a monumental Franco-era memorial built into a mountainside, topped by an immense cross. The basilica carved within the rock makes a dramatic, if controversial, sight. Buses run from El Escorial, or taxis can be hired for the round trip.
- Cuenca Alta del Río Manzanares — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve protecting the upper Manzanares River valley, offering a natural escape with hiking trails and wildlife close to the capital.
- Sierra del Rincón — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the north of the region known for its scenic mountain landscapes, traditional villages, and biodiversity, ideal for nature lovers and day trips.

Best Time to Visit
- May–June and September–October — warm but not scorching weather with average temperatures around 21.9°C, sunny skies, and low rainfall, making this the sweet spot for city and day-trip exploring.
- July–August — the hottest months with possible highs of 40°C, but also lively festivals and long evenings. Plan indoor activities or pool time during peak afternoon heat.
- Late autumn and winter — cooler, cloudier weather and occasional rain, but far fewer tourists. A good season for museum visits and enjoying Madrid's cozy cafés and restaurants.

Planning Tips
- Cercanías for day trips — use the commuter rail network for easy access to El Escorial, Alcalá de Henares, and Sierra de Guadarrama. Ticket machines use contactless +renfe & tu cards; a single-journey contactless bank card option is available at some station barriers.
- Tourist Travel Pass — the T-zone Tourist Ticket covers unlimited metro, Cercanías, and bus travel across the entire community, from €17 for one day to about €70.80 for seven days, loaded onto a reusable Multi Card.
- Taxi negotiation at sights — at places like Valle de los Caídos, where a public bus involves a long hike, negotiate a round-trip fare with a taxi driver rather than using the meter; aim for €50 or less per cab.
- Stay alert in crowds — while the region is very safe, be mindful of pickpockets in tourist zones and on public transport, and exercise extra caution in certain peripheral neighborhoods after dark.
