About this place
Foz do Iguaçu sits at the meeting point of Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, where the Iguaçu River flows into the Paraná. The city is best known as the gateway to the spectacular Iguaçu Falls, one of Brazil's most iconic natural wonders, and forms a cross-border tourism hub with Puerto Iguazú (Argentina) and Ciudad del Este (Paraguay).
Despite its global fame, the city itself feels like any mid-sized Brazilian town — practical and unpretentious, with hotels and tri-lingual signs but few dedicated tourist shopping streets. Visitors come for the falls and the colossal Itaipu Dam, not for urban charm.

Things to See
- Iguaçu Falls — The Brazilian side offers panoramic views of the main curtain of waterfalls. Walkways extend over the river for up-close perspectives, and an elevator brings you back up from the base.
- Itaipu Dam — One of the world's largest hydroelectric dams straddling the Brazil–Paraguay border. Tours are available on both sides; the Paraguayan side sometimes offers free visits with advance registration.
- Parque das Aves (Bird Park) — Located near the national park entrance, this conservation park lets you walk through large aviaries with toucans, macaws, and other native birds.

Best Time to Visit
- February to April — The most comfortable window: warm temperatures, manageable rainfall, and good sunshine. Crowds are thinner than peak summer.
- May to September — Cooler, drier months ideal for walking the trails, though the falls may have less water volume.
- October to January — Hot, humid summer season with heavier rain and larger crowds, but the falls are at their most thunderous.
- Avoid weekday peak hours on the bridge — If crossing borders, early mornings and mid-afternoons on weekdays see heavy commuter traffic and longer waits.

Planning Tips
- Carry your passport daily — You'll need it for spontaneous trips to Argentina or Paraguay, and border checks are mandatory.
- Use the bus to cross borders — Buses skip most of the vehicle queue at immigration, saving time on trips to Puerto Iguazú or Ciudad del Este.
- Exchange money across the border — Better rates for Argentine pesos or Paraguayan guaraníes are found in the neighboring cities rather than in Foz do Iguaçu.
- Ride-share app strategy — Install Rápidocar and 99 alongside Uber for faster pickups; drivers may request cash payment, which is common locally.
- Check bus schedules online — FozTrans publishes routes and timetables digitally; schedule PDFs include route maps, but service can be irregular.
