About this place

Last updated Aug 2, 2026

Kropyvnytskyi is the administrative center of Kirovohrad Oblast, set on the banks of the Inhul River in central Ukraine. Once known as Yelisavetgrad, the city enjoyed a cultural golden age in the 19th century — it was here that the first professional Ukrainian theater was founded — and its compact downtown still holds echoes of that era. Locals affectionately call the city "a little Paris" for its pre-Soviet architectural charm.

Today Kropyvnytskyi is an industrial hub and a motorway junction served by rail and, before the war, a civilian airport. The city administration has been actively renovating older buildings, making the center increasingly pleasant to visit. While English is not widely spoken, basic Ukrainian or Russian phrases go a long way, and most hotels and restaurants have enough English to welcome international guests.

  • Catch a performance at the historic theater — Kropyvnytskyi was the birthplace of the first professional Ukrainian theater, and attending a play or opera here remains a highlight of local cultural life.
  • Stroll through city parks — green spaces scattered across the city provide a relaxed setting for walking, people-watching, or a quiet picnic when the weather is warm.
  • Sample Ukrainian national dishes — try borshch, vareniki, or draniki (potato pancakes) at one of the many affordable cafes in the center, where prices are low by European standards.
