Things to Do

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Climb the Duomo or Giotto's Bell Tower — wind up the staircases inside the cathedral or the adjacent campanile for some of the best panoramic views over Florence's rooftops and the Tuscan hills beyond.
  • Stroll the Boboli Gardens — explore the extensive formal gardens behind the Pitti Palace, filled with sculptures and offering excellent city views. Stop for a drink at the hilltop café.
  • Walk the Oltrarno neighborhood — cross the Arno to the city's 'Left Bank,' a district of narrow medieval streets and generations-old artisan workshops, perfect for a leisurely wander.
  • Join a spiritual retreat at Badia Fiorentina — visitors aged 18–35 can take a two-day monastery retreat, or anyone can attend peaceful evening vespers and mass in this art-filled, central church.
  • Watch street performers at Palazzo Vecchio — in the evenings, the square comes alive with acts ranging from violin duets to living statues, ideal for enjoying with a post-dinner gelato.
  • Catch a Fiorentina football match — see the city's Serie A team play at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, located just northeast of the city center.

Things to See

  • Piazza del Duomo — the breathtaking Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, capped by Brunelleschi's iconic dome, dominates this square alongside the ornate Baptistery and Giotto's Bell Tower.
  • The Uffizi Gallery — one of the world's most famous art museums, housing masterpieces by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo. Pre-booking a timed entry is essential to avoid extremely long lines.
  • Piazzale Michelangelo — the classic postcard view of Florence unfolds from this hillside terrace south of the river, though it can get crowded with tour buses.
  • Pitti Palace and Museums — this vast palace complex across the Arno houses several important galleries showcasing Renaissance art and royal apartments.
  • Bargello National Museum — a superb collection of Renaissance sculpture by artists including Donatello and Michelangelo, housed in a historic fortress-like building.
  • San Miniato al Monte — a beautiful Romanesque church perched on a hill above Piazzale Michelangelo, offering serene interiors and an alternative panoramic city view.

  • May to mid-September — this is the most comfortable window for weather, with warm temperatures averaging 22.4°C and abundant sunshine. This is also peak tourist season, so expect large crowds and high prices.
  • Late spring (April–May) and early autumn (September–October) — these shoulder months offer a sweet spot of pleasant, mild weather with daytime temperatures between 16°C and 27°C, and somewhat thinner crowds than the summer peak.
  • Winter (November–February, excluding holidays) — the quietest and least expensive time to visit, with daytime highs around 11°C to 14°C. You'll experience a different, more local city, though pack for rain and cooler temperatures.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Book museum tickets online weeks in advance — for the Uffizi and Accademia, a pre-booked timed entry slot (with a small surcharge) is the only way to reliably bypass the notoriously long general admission lines.
  • Use the tram from the airport — the T2 tram connects the airport directly to the main train station (Santa Maria Novella) in about 20 minutes for a flat fare, offering a cheaper and often faster alternative to the €25 taxi flat rate.
  • Validate and understand bus tickets — a contactless tap with a bank card is valid for 90 minutes across all urban buses and trams. Paper tickets must be bought in advance from tobacconists and stamped on board.
  • Look beyond the tourist menus — for the best value and quality food, leave the streets directly south of the Duomo and explore restaurants in the Santa Croce district or across the river in the Oltrarno.
  • Avoid bringing a car into the city — the historic center is a strictly enforced Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL). Use park-and-ride lots at the edge of the city and rely on walking and public transport to get around.
  • Expect to pay more to sit down — restaurants and cafés often have separate pricing for service at a table versus standing at the counter. Ask before you sit to avoid an unexpectedly high bill for a coffee.
