Fianarantsoa is a city in the central highlands of Madagascar, historically the capital of a larger province that was subdivided in 2007. It serves as a major crossroads and transport hub for journeys through the island’s interior and toward the east coast.

Known as a center for traditional paper-making and wood carving, the city also acts as a convenient base for exploring several of Madagascar’s richest natural reserves. From here, travelers can board the scenic FCE train to Manakara or venture out to rainforests teeming with lemurs and endemic wildlife.
